Fiberart International 2022: Lecture with Artist Robin Bernstein

July 28, 2022 @ 6:00 pm

Free

Fiberart International 2022 Artist Robin Bernstein, trained as a painter, has worked with string and wax as her primary medium for the past 15 years. Bernstein’s presentation will focus on her Beauty & Terror series, 18 brilliantly colored and detailed fiber “paintings” depicting stories of the Holocaust; stories of crime, terror, as well as redemption and courage. Each work of art is composed of thousands of tiny pieces of cut string that have been pressed into a bed of wax and brushed onto cut plywood; each takes between 4 and 6 months to create. Bernstein’s Beauty & Terror series is her way of saying “Those who do not know or cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

Bernstein will be introduced by Marcel Lamont Walker, the lead artist and coordinator of CHUTZ-POW, SUPERHEROES OF THE HOLOCAUST, an acclaimed comic-book series from The Holocaust Center in Pittsburgh. Like Bernstein’s work, CHUTZ-POW! initially attracts an audience through the appeal of comic books and superheroes, but ultimately tells the stories of survivors and heroes of the Holocaust.
