Brew House Arts (BHA) is a nonprofit art center located in Pittsburgh’s South Side. We produce and present fine art exhibitions in a contemporary gallery and provide studio spaces for professional artists. Emerging artists and curators work with us through our residency programs to develop their skills and hone their artistic voices.
BHA supports both artists and curators in their imaginative endeavors. Through programs for both curators and artists, provides space, professional developments, mentorship and more to bring a creative idea to life and connect them to audiences. Through the various programs found below, BHA provides a wide range of support to meet the diverse needs of artists and curators.
Our Programs
Distillery Emerging Artist Residency
Distillery is a year-long studio residency designed to help seven Pittsburgh-based emerging artists transition into a professional artistic career by supporting a rigorous studio practice and providing professional development opportunities in a creative and affordable environment. This program focuses on inspiring participants to embrace new challenges in their work and connect to a supportive community. Artists work throughout the year towards a group exhibition at the Brew House Gallery. Selected artists will gain access to local mentors and to monthly professional development workshops led by a variety of experts in the field. Guest speakers will guide group critiques and give advice on essential skills for artists such as developing effective work samples, writing grant proposals, collaborating with community, marketing as an artist, and more.
Prospectus Emerging Curator Residency
Prospectus is a curatorial residency program designed to support Pittsburgh’s emerging curators in the development of new exhibitions. The program provides a small cohort of curators with mentorship, professional development, financial support, and a 2,700 sq. ft. gallery space in order to bring their curatorial visions to life. Selected curators participate in a comprehensive professional development program that provides the tools and training necessary to create new exhibitions. Experts in the field will give advice on essential skills for curators including developing an exhibition statement, artist engagement and interaction, community collaboration and outreach, installation, marketing and promotion.
Creative Cluster
The Creative Cluster studios consists of open work spaces that encourage engagement, innovation, and communal connections. Whether a craft business, artist, or non-profit, the Cluster creates an environment that bolsters creativity and promotes collaboration. With fellow creatives close by and space to bring ideas to life, the Cluster can be the launching pad for any creative project.
Exhibitions
BHA’s unique postindustrial 2,700 sq. ft. gallery features a wide range of exhibitions from local artists to cutting edge installations by contemporary artists from across the US and beyond. The Gallery at the Brew House features a mix of changing exhibitions including exhibits organized in-house such as the annual Distillery emerging artist showcase, as well and offering exhibition space to local guilds and artist organizations to exhibit artwork. Exhibitions at the Brew House strive to foster pathways for collaboration and exchange, offer an accessible atmosphere for experimentation, and to increase social awareness through representation of non-mainstream perspectives. Exhibitions are the widest reaching of Brew House programs, serving approximately 2,500 individuals annually that come to visit the gallery free of charge.
